What exactly does shorting the lifespan mean when over clocking a CPU.

Is it like after 5 years it poofs out all at once or is it a degradation thing so a time goes on it performs worse. I want to over clock my new I7 6700k and I'm very paranoid.

As long as it is a stable overclock, you should be fine till the time comes to upgrade.
