What exactly does the -nomap do?

Archived from groups: alt.games.operation-flashpoint (More info?)

due to the large number of addons available
and the fact that many people now have tons of addons

operation flashpoint loads all of your addon folder when it starts
without the -nomap it tries to load an incredible amount of stuff into RAM
and continue operation. On most systems out there this brings the game to a
screeching halt and an abrupt return to desktop

No memory mapping. I get memory exception errors if I leave the line out
when using either a GF4 MX440, a GF5 5200 or a Radeon 9800 Pro (but the
Radeon 9200 and 9600 don't error).

If taking the line out doesn't break it, may as well leave it off.

Interesting articles, but where do I put the nomap option at the moment
my shortcut looks like

"C:\Program Files\Codemasters\OperationFlashpoint
\FLASHPOINTBETA.EXE" /nosplash

Do I just put -nomap after the nosplash?

Thanks

Torchy

AFAIK that should be '-nosplash' not '/nosplash'

i checked my shortcut and the WGL shortcut puts it as /nosplash and
this still seems to work.

Jaffo, thanks for reminding me about this one! I've overlooked
Kegety's OFP Launcher but after testing the latest version I think
it's _GREAT_ and much easier than having lots of shortcut's.

You should check out OFP Watch (http://www.binarybone.com/ofpwatch/), it
also supports modfolders and automatic addon downloading from AAS
servers (the server side of ofp watch). With version 1.10 modfolders on
the server can be automatically activated, so you just activate your
client-side mods (sound, sky and/or water-mods) and let OFP Watch do
the rest.

Afaik mod folder selection is more accessible in Kegetys launcher, so
for singleplayer that one might still be the better choice, but for mp
nothing beats OFP Watch. If you play on AAS servers you get
automatically notified about addon updates, you can let OFP Watch
automatically download and install them for you and with 1.10 even
automatically activate them. So if the server is running with different
mods at different times (wgl, fdf, ecp), OFP Watch does all for you...

Oh, btw: the addons do not "get loaded into ram" when ofp starts, but
mapped into virtual memory. If all the ~3gb of addons i use would get
loaded into ram i should be able to see this in the swapfile usage,
which i don't. This is what the -nomap parameter changes 😉
