Hey, so I am building a mini vacuum that I want to use to clean my room. The problem I am encountering is that the fans that I am using are simply not powerful enough and are not pushing enough air for there to be noticeable suction. My question is, are there any good and fairly inexpensive fans that I can use in my vacuum? Do you think I can get away with an 80mm fan or does it have to be a bigger size such as 120mm? However, the fan must be a 12V DC fan. I don't want a super powerful vacuum, I just want one powerful enough to clean dirt, hair, dust etc from the floor.

Also, the size of the vacuum box is 130mm but this can be slightly increased as I have bigger sizes of the same box. The model of the fan I am using for the vacuum right now is this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/80mm-2-pin-Computer-PC-Desktop-Case-Cooler-CPU-Cooling-Fan-Black-Highspeed-12V/162513086566?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
This fan doesn't produce nearly as much suction as i need though.

Thanks.

Edit: I found a fan here by Delta, do you think this is overkill for my purposes?

Solution
Honestly, it would be a lot easier just to buy a vacuum and probably a lot cheaper and more efficient than trying to engineer one from computer case fans yourself. I mean, the most powerful fan I'm aware of in the flavor of 140mm comes from Noctua, but I can't imagine any fan being powerful enough to work as a functioning vacuum cleaner. I hope that helps perhaps. Short answer, the most powerful/best fans you can get are from Noctua.

Computer fans are designed to move air. They also aren't designed to suck in debris and dirt directly into the blades.

Vacuum pump/fans are designed to create high air pressure, resulting in low pressure on the 'vacuum' side. Effectively they are compressors. Compressors require tight tolerances that you don't find in a typical computer fan.

The little hand held vacuum units rely on effectively small electric turbines. You can get piles of them from direct manufacturers or for small markups on the big etailers and retailers.

And there are far more powerful fans than the Noctua ones out there, but as performance increases costs go up (and the voltage too)

A cheap used vacuum with a tiny nozzle or crevice attachment is your best bet for performance. I've been gifted a number of those cheap 'computer' cleaning kits, usually cheap junk.

Well do you want to do this to have a good functional vacuum? Or just because you want to build a vacuum for the hell of it? If it's the former, come on man just go buy a vacuum.

I highly doubt any PC fan is going to be powerful enough nor are the fan blades or bearings designed for the purpose of sucking up dirt from the floor. Vacuum fans look more like an impeller than a fan, they remind me of the blower motor of a car. I'm am doubtful you will be able to build a useful vacuum with a pc fan.

To clean a "room" a computer size fan is at least an order of magnitude too small. Period.
No matter how much you mess with it, or design some housing...it will never be good enough to clean a room.

Go to the Goodwill and buy a real vacuum, cheap.

Repurposed computer parts are not The Answer to everything.

Solution
Understood guys. I just wanted to see if it would have been worth it to build my own vacuum as I am on a tight budget right now but now i see that is not possible.

Thank you so much for your help.
