I have a external drive for my mac. I would also like to store files from my PC as well is that possible

yes its possible , mac files are called nrg. files ..your best bet is to make a folder for each on the drive..i.e pc and mac

format FAT 32 as both windows and Mac can read and write to that.

FAT32 supports upto 8GB Terabytes, but cannot access files larger than 4GB, which can cause issues with DVD images.

If its a big external drive, think about creating dedicated partions using native mac format and NTFS for the PC and maybe a smaller FAT32 if you need to share certain files.

if you format the drive as ntfs make sure that you are running 10.6.x
