I mean what format should the source drive be? Was trying to see if I could backup my external drives (I thought it was doing this already, but apparently not). They're exFat drives and I could not remove them from the exclusion list. Tried the USB drive I had formatted to APFS two weeks ago and it can be backed up and removed from the list, whatever you want.

So does Time Machine only backup APFS, HFS+ and Mac OS Extended formats?

Not that I actually need these drives backed up, but would like to know

Solution
HFS+ = Mac OS Extended. Time Machine up to the current version of Mac OS only supports backing up to/from HFS+ and has some ability to use APFS. ExFAT is not a supported file system.
