Question What games will this CPU/GPU combination NOT play?

Hi, Guys,

I am upgrading my HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Desktop Mini (7"x7"x1-1/2") for gaming. Obviously I will be using an external GPU. Since I am limited by the socket to 1151, the strongest possible CPU is a Core I9-9900k. I have acquired one for the upgrade.

I want to play at 1440p ultrawide. I have two GPU's available to me.

The easiest card to install is a PNY RTX 3060 12GB XLR8 single fan edition..

The other GPU available to me is an Aorus RTX 3080 Waterforce. This would obviously be much more powerful, but add the bulk and complexity of a custom loop. I have all the parts on hand for a custom loop...including the CPU heatsink. If I do not use the 3080 now, I will surely use it in another computer in the reasonably near future.

But for now:

I am totally unexperienced in PC gaming. Can one of you wise and experienced folks PLEASE tell me what games are not playable with the 3060 (I assume the 3080 will play nearly anything I can throw at it!)?

TIA, and warm regards,

Larry

this card is capable of playing anything.

if you have a particular resolution and range of in-game settings you want to be using then that would depend on any particular games in question.

@ 21:9 1440p, you will need to use lower in-game graphical settings and likely no Ray Tracing at all with the most demanding games out there.

the RTX 3080 is going to be a bit more powerful than the 3060.

my current 3080 Ti can run any of the most demanding games available a bit over 100fps with highest settings and RT effects enabled @ 3440x1440p.
so expect a bit lower performance than that.

hopefully you are also upgrading the PC case and any OEM motherboard and/or power supply still being used.

these HP systems come with terrible airflow options and low quality motherboards and PSU.

Well, the thing is, that CPU would severely bottleneck an RTX 3080. For that matter, it would also bottleneck an RTX 3060. Here's a video demonstrating how an i9-10900K, a faster CPU than the i9-9900K, bottlenecks an RX 6600, a card that's a bit slower than the RTX 3060:
So I would say that the RTX 3080 would be a waste because it would never be able to perform as it's supposed to because the CPU wouldn't be able to keep up. Between the two of them, I'd take the RTX 3060 but even that's not really worth it because the RT performance of the RTX 3060 isn't very compelling which makes its high price not worth it.

The RTX 3060 currently costs at least $350 and it would be considerably bottlenecked by your i9-9900K. However, Newegg is having some incredible sale on the RX 6600 XT. Under normal circumstances, the RX 6600 XT is 12% faster than the RTX 3060 , although I think that they'd both be the same speed with your system, limited by your i9-9900K.

What makes the RX 6600 XT so compelling is that, as I said, Newegg is having some stupidly-insane sale on it. It is, right now (and this is no joke), only $250! As if saving $100 for the same perfomance (with a higher performance ceiling) isn't enough, MSi has a $20 mail-in-rebate to go with it which brings the price down to a completely insane $230!

When the RX 6600 XT is that low of a price, you ignore everything else, grab it and ask questions later!

Solution to a CPU bottleneck is to increase resolution or settings. Then it doesn't matter that much.

I would not put a 9900K into an HP. Stop at the 9900 at least.

If you plan to use the stock HP cooling with a 9900k, prepare to be disappointed.

Actually probably cheaper to pick up an 11700K and a new LGA1200 motherboard at this point. 11700K is only $240, and a motherboard will run you about $100

Or you can jump up to an i5-12400F for about $100 less than that, and leave yourself an upgrade path to a 13700k later on.

9900K are running about $225 used, not worth it over a 12400 plus motherboard.
