Hello,

i am almost ready to order the components for the new rig but still not sure which GPU to go for. i am considering a Asus PB278Q for display but questions is if a single GTX 690 will be able to handle current games maxed out at 1560x1440 resolution.

Also would be nice if experts take a look at the spec i want to order and warn me if any bottle-necking going to happen between components:

intel i5-3570k 3,4 ghz
asus or evga gtx 690
asus sabertooth z77
8gb (2x4gb) DDR3-1866 corsair ram (vengeance red)
Hitachi, sata3 1tb, 7200, 32mb
Samsung 2,5 sata3 840 250gb ssd
be quiet dark power pro 10 650w (80+ gold)
be quiet dark rock 2 cpu cooler 140mm
asus pb278q 27"
windows 7 home... 64 bit
NZXT phantom black/ big tower

this rig will be used just for gaming...

thanks in advance

2560x1440 is a pretty demanding resolution. While cards like 7870 or 660ti and above could do well with lowered settings at that res, currently only a dual-gpu solution is probably the only way to max demanding games (FC3, Hitman Absolution and such) and get good framerates.

If that psu is a good unit, it's enough to power the 690, they're very power efficient. If you can afford it, I say go for it. Don't expect solid 60fps. Even if you always get 60fps, there's probably going to be the occasional dipping to 50s or 40s especially at some demanding place/level/situation (ie. firefight).

Nope. Quad GPU/4-Way multi GPU (or whatever you want to call it) isn't for real gaming. It's not bad for benchmark but you really can't expect good scaling. Stick with a single 690.

I have a single 7870 ocd to 1200/1200 and I get 25-60 fps (60 fps cap) on borderlands 2 maxed except physx low @2560x1440. You really don't need a 690 unless you don't want to upgrade for a while. I would recommend something more powerful than a 7870 though.

That's BL2. Demanding titles like Far Cry 3 or Hitman Absolution will require a dual gpu solution (like the GTX690) to max out the games and get good framerates.

I think 7970 CF is kinda pushing it on a 650W psu.

It's very simple, 2560x1440 = ~3,7 million pixels, 1920x1080 = ~2 million pixels which means you'd need to double your GPU performance to get equal framerates between the said resolutions.

i can always change power supply and motherboard for different options. i am thinking about 3 way 680 also but more considered about the heat, noise and electricity bills which in long term can be more than the GPU itself

The gtx 690 will be enough.. I think the only reason you would see FPS drop below 60 would be in high CPU intense situations... You may want to OC your CPU to 4.2-4.4 Ghz to help with that.

Asus DCU2 GTX 680 (2slot) and MSI Lightning GTX 680 probably run cooler and quieter in 2-way SLI albeit with more power draw. Not sure about 2slot Asus but I can vouch for MSI as it is the best aftermarket cooled GPU out there at the moment.

I won't say lower temps. Lower noise and lower power sure, but lower temps, I don't think so. The 2 GPUs on that single card will run hotter than the 2 card approach, if those 2 cards have great coolers (not reference blower) like MSI's Twin Frozr or ASUS DCuII, although that also depends on the airflow inside the case.

Anyway, I agree that a single card solution is better since it takes less space and temps will still be very reasonable.

Well yea, but in most situations the top card in a sli/cf setup will be hotter(unless you have some super awesome cooler) than the gtx 690 will be. Maybe the average of the 2 cards would be lower temp.

i think i'll pick the 690... dont know which brand is better? and if 650w is enough to power it... would like to try the 7970 in CF but i play world of tanks and not sure if it supports xfire, therefore not going to risk. also i verify that 7990 is very noisy, power hungry, heavy and huge! it was one of my options but after watching few reviews i changed my mind.
