Agreed. No point in upgrading now unless its absolutely necessary.
The G80 will have to be DX 10 compliant, otherwise your going to
see Nvidia go down like a freaking rock. (I still miss 3DFX)

Well if the hybrid design is correct, then you will likely see partial DX10 compliance, and it will be a great DX9.0C+ (Dx9.0L?) card, but may act like the FXs which were great DX8.1 cards, but lacked performance in true DX9. We'll see though, could be pure brute force attack, which may help it compete despite being this hybrid solution we've heard about.

It does make sense, but I hope Nvidia wouldnt sacrifice DX9.0L preformance for the sake of producing a refreshed 7900 and having that turn into another FX line.

Partial compliance is exactly what the problem would (end up being)
People would buy the cards, run fine until Vista then turn out later that they cant really play anything on the new DX with decent frame rate...ala FX series on DX9.0 compliant games.

It a stepping stone. Too strong for DX9, too weak for DX10. This kind of progress seems normal.

Yeah, if it does launch in 2 months, anything later should be far closer to full DX10 compliance. The people who bought FXs are just finding out now with Oblivion how bad that was. Now for DX10 it likely won't matter for a year or two, when the fall backs are less and less, but truely those people usually don't buy now and hang on that long, by the time it's an issue they'll have new gear.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, but it's somthing to remember if anyone is looking to buy for long term.
