my cpu is i3 4170 and i am thinking of buying a new gpu, i could buy a gtx 1050 ti, 1060, 960 and 970, but i am afraid that the cpu would bottleneck these, so which one should i buy?

That depends on your budget. You can get a gtx 1080ti even but the performance will decrease every time you step up your gpu. Which means that ,if you are on a tight budget, better than whats more value for money,in that case a 1050ti.Yes gtx 1060 may provide higher performance(10-15%) but because of your old cpu that performance may as well be nothing more than 5%.In the end you pay more for less.
While it's only an i3, by the 4th generation they weren't too bad, and yours has a good base clock speed. Either the 1050ti or 970 would be a good match, but there is nothing stopping you from getting a 1060 and having it work quite well too......it's more a case of not spending too much on a GPU if you're not going to be getting the full performance from it.
