Hello everyone -

I was a gaming enthusiast back in the day, and now trying to get back into it. I bought a PC ~5 years ago that came with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 and I'm now looking to upgrade. I'm hoping to get a decent GPU for <$500.

The current specs on my rig are:
  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz
  • 16.0 GB TAM
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070
What do you guys think is a good card for me to upgrade to given these specs? I've never upgraded a GPU before so are there other specs that would be helpful to know? What are some of the best resources to read if I wanted to swap out the GPU on my own? Thank you for the help! I appreciate it.

This one would be decent I think. I used to have an msi 6700xt. Close to the same card but it should be close to the 2080ti in performance

Check this link for power supplies. You want probably no lower than a tier b unit when you’re shopping.

AMD says for that card you want at least a 650 watt power supply. Personally I have an 850 watt Corsair rmx 850. While that would be overkill for that card something like that would give headroom to upgrade later. This unit is the one I’ve got. But there are other great options as well. Check out the list if you need to purchase one and it should give an idea what units are of good quality.

Similar nvidia cards would be the 3060ti or the 3070. Ray tracing nvidia does better. In raw performance a 6700xt/6750xt is basically between those 2 cards. Usually the amd cards are a bit cheaper. To get to that 500 dollar price with an nvidia card you will be looking probably at a 3060 if you need as new power supply as well.
