what gpu to get for 1440p monitor?

I am soon going to get a 1440p monitor http://www.amazon.com/Acer-G257HU-smidpx-25-Inch-Widescreen/dp/B00QS0AKVK and I figured my r9 270x isn't going to cut it. I am planing on gaming on it, but don't need an overkill just something to play enjoyable frame rates at 30-60. I initially figured that I would get like a r9 290 just because it seemed like it would get the job done, but then I started looking and it seems like every generation you go back the values get better. (If you buy on Ebay). But I don't know if its smart to buy too far back. Also I don't know if I should go ahead and join team green(nvidia). There's just so many damn options and I just would like to know whats the best price to performance GPU for me to get for a 1440p monitor.

One of the best 1440p single cards before you get all the way up to the GTX 980ti is the AMD R9 390 8G. It is a great spot in terms of price/ performance.

At 1440p on ultra settings you'll be looking at about an average of 50 FPS, so for a really smooth run using this card you'll probably want to be playing AAA titles on 'High'.

The GTX 980 is about $200 more expensive than the R9 390, and while it will have better FPS at 1440p isn't a particularly good choice between price and performance.

If you're looking into a GTX 980 it would be worth going all the way up for $100 more to the GTX 980ti, which is by far and away the current best single gaming card before you start looking at Titans.

Ideally an R9 390, but you can get new R9 290s for near $200 and they'll come fairly close.
