Gigabyte GA M55Plus-SG3 mother board. This is my budget runner that I want to upgrade a little bit. What are my limits to what video cards that I can run. It currently have a FX 6600 256mb. Would like a 1GB but didnt know if this motherboard can handle it. Can't find specs for this. Want to spend around 50 or so on the video card.

Current set up
AMD 3800 +
GA M55Plus-SG3 Board
512mb 800MHz 6400 Memory
FX 6600 256mb video card

Trying to upgrade to:
AMD X2 6000 +
Keep motherboard
4GB DDR 2 800 MHz 6400 Memory
1GB unknown Video card

Don't even try to upgrade that build for gaming. No matter if you put a $1000 GPU in it it wouldn't run any modern games. Your CPU will bottleneck and game you try to play. If you absolutely need to, then get a radeon 5450. It won't do any gaming though. But for $50 and your setup, nothing will. I recommend tmjust saving up for a new build. Sorry, but hope this helps.

Thanks, not trying to biuld the ultimate gaming system. I haven't gamed in years but may occasionally game on this set up. If I was more serious about gaming then yea I would biuld a new tower. Just want something that can handle some gaming even if I have to turn the graphics down. Investing hundreds into something that you might use is always a bad idea. So why would I put a 5450 in this tower if it won't do any gaming? Right now I have a dual core x2 cpu at 2 GHz. If I put a x2 dual core 6000+ thats 3.2 GHz am I still going to have bottlenecking?

It will have massive bottlenecking. Most games require a minimum of CPU performance these days, and with such an old CPU it will bottleneck any gaming GPU. There are very few it won't. The problem is that, while your CPU might meet the minimum requirements, the GPU will be too much better to utilize much of it. If you get a radeon 7750, the worst gaming class GPU you can get, it should play games at medium maybe. With your CPU it might play on low or lowest, and will still probably not reach 60fps. I have an athlon II x2 at 4.08Ghz and it cannot play planetside 2 at all, even at lowest, with a GPU that should run it at medium to high at my resolution. What games do you plan on playing though? If you do plan on following through I recommend the 7750. You might only get half or a quarter of the performance of it in modern games though.

Alright, good information. Thank you very much. I'm not sure what games I'll even be playing for sure. I use to play COD, Battlefield, Far Cry and I really miss good old Quake. So something in that realm of games but who knows. GTA5 looks awesome but I wouldn't even attempt to try it on this set up. Save that one for when i finally get a Playstation.

So mostly older games? If so that the 7750 is fine. As for GTA V, it is not currently in development for PC. Rock star has said it isn't coming, but best case scenario for PC gamers is months or years, if it ever does come.

Oh nice. Well mostly older games, but I would consider trying the newer versions and maybe newer games that might be able to run on this set up. Yea I'm not going to hold my breath for GTA5. I'll probably get a PS3 soon anyways.

Okay, it should be fine. You also have the option of trying demos to see how they run on your hardware. And why PS3 now with PS4 around the corner?

Nice, definitely be running demos first then. Haha, yea I probably should get the PS4 since I've waited this long. It really comes down to how much the system is though. It will be another thing I don't use often so we will see. I'm not the typical consumer that buys the next best thing every time it comes out. Would be different if I was really going to get the use out of it but don't have the time.

Makes sense to me. I'd get the PS4 simply because it'll be the latest thing for the next 7 or so years. Its $400 for the console. Sure, the PS4 is much more expensive, but the PS3 is immediately obsolete.
