What would be a better and compatible upgrade for my desktop ASUS CM1831? I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit service pack 1 build 7601. Processor: AMD FX-8120 Eight-Core Processor, 3100 Mhz, 4 Core, 8 Logical Processors. AMD Radeon HD 7450 Graphics Card, Adapter Type: AMD Radeon Graphics Processor (0x6779), Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. compatible, with 1GB Video RAM. I am not sure what other information you would need nor how to obtain the information, if any. Please let me know if you need anything further. Also, not sure if this is unrelated but I've been having an issue for roughly 9 months increasingly worse maybe you can help? The computer gets much louder all of a sudden, sometimes when I have a few windows open sometimes not, I used to be able to have way more programs, windows open before and never heard my computer get loud, EVER. So what could be the issue? I did install "Core Temp 1.0 RC8" and noticed the "Freq" in "Processor Information" changes when it's loud like to 3414.23MHz or more VID: 1.4063 v and 1.4812 v. (I have no idea what this means, I am just relating what I have seen!) Please if you have any suggestions, I would be most appreciative. I can't afford another computer but am an online student and run a business from my computer so I need this to last a while longer...
I forgot to add that I use 2 monitors-1 VGA and 1 HDMI hookups. Thanks!

Thanks, Denise

The loud noise is most likely your GPU/CPU, make sure to remove all dust from inside these components, once they heat up (from the excess dust) the fans have to ramp up higher to keep safe temps.

You mentioned that you're a student/small business owner and wanted to update graphics but let me ask you, are you a gamer as better gaming would be the main benefit of updating your GPU. With that CPU you can go quite high in the GPU space but your current PSU (looked up your system) only has a 300w which limits you to a 750/750ti/950 that doesn't require a power connector, any of these GPUs will greatly improve your gaming experience.

Yes I do play games and my graphics card has a hard time keeping up sometimes. I don't play really graphics intensive games, more like hidden object games and such but some of them make the graphics card run slower with intermittent freezing up. And about the dust...I clean the dust out regularly so I'm not sure what else could be the problem?
Thanks for your help!

Looking a bit more into your hardware it's the FX CPU that's known to be a bit loud, you can do a few things such as replace the CPU fan to one that performs better/quieter, there are also tower cases that help reduce noise but those can be expensive.

For your needs I'll still recommend any 750/750ti/950 that doesn't require an additional power connection, they're all quite the upgrade over your current GPU.

Passmark Scores:

Radeon Hd 7450: 320
GTX 750 3124
GTX 750TI 3686
GTX 950 5246

My vote? 950 all will feel like a new PC gaming wise.

Ok I have more to add to previous question(s): in this past week, the loudness of my computer increased with NO ACTIVITY ON MY PART. I performed a regular semi-annual cleaning/dust removal and turned computer on just after plugging all back in. Immediately the computer was EXTREMELY LOUD, as if it were working HARD. Once booted into windows, it became even louder, sounding like I had many memory intensive programs running at maximum, I mean it was so loud it was scary! I thought it would "blow up". It ran like this for at least four hours, yeah I guess I wanted to see what would happen, or just to "feel it out" since I just cleaned it and now it was WORSE?! Anyway, I shut it down and gave it a rest for more than 12 hours. I just turned on and it was whisper quiet...for about 4 minutes. It booted into windows then I heard the first increase in loudness, and have been watching the temp readings on the cpu, which by the way, were at the maximum yesterday, 70 degrees Celsius. So now, I watched the temp rise with the loudness, and put a medium sized fan next to the computer and it's blowing on it now. Hasn't reduced the loudness but the loudness hasn't increased nor has the temp. Yesterday when it was at an all time high loudness level, the temp climbed to the max at 70 C and I had a fan blowing directly on computer from the moment I powered on! So I really need the best opinion of what I need to be looking to replace! I have very little money to spend and can't afford to buy the wrong thing the first time, so your best opinion is golden for me! I really appreciate your help with this. Thanks so much!!

Holy Crap wow, so just going to dive in haha. 70 isn't that hot for load but sounds like your system is going there for no reason, is it like a loud crunching noise that is maybe constantly coming from the hard drive, if the computer is always thinking even when it shouldn't the hard drive will be crunching.

Other Ideas: CPU or GPU making the loud noise for whatever reason, get MSI afterburner a free download and monitor CPU/GPU temps and usage, this will let you know if one is working all the time even when it shouldn't be. That's what I would start with let me know how that goes.

No crunching noise, just sounds like fan(s). So I will get the MSI afterburner download now and will let you know. Thanks

BTW, I have AMD FX-8120 Eight-Core Processor. Is this something I will be able to replace myself? I know some things, but not as much as others.

Ok so this is strange..I haven't really run anything except for a couple more chrome browser windows were opened and have been running the MSI Afterburner program simultaneously for about an hour. Then just now realized I couldn't hear my computer (sometimes it's hard to realize when computer stops being so damn loud when I have a big fan running on it!). So I look and sure enough it's whisper quiet again, just AT RANDOM! I looked at the Afterburner hardware monitor window and the only thing that had changed was the CPU Usage graphs. Initially, several of the CPUs were BUSY with the graph indicating numbers going from low to high, up into the 93% range but constantly changing, yet about 3 of the CPUs were barely changing, but the graph was quite varied as well with numbers usually in the low percentage range but randomly peaking higher, yet, the graph wasn't nearly as "busy" as the others I mentioned.

The difference NOW, are that the lines in the graph are relatively at the same level across the board on all of the 8 CPUs. Most are showing no activity , and about 3 CPUs show very light-moderat activity but within the same low level percentage range (under 30%). So what the hell? Any ideas? When these problems started months ago, I have frequently been going into task manager to see what may have been running, but didn't see anything unusual. I have even on occasion opened "services" and looked around at what services and processes are running and again, nothing unusual there either. Although, it's not like I am a computer expert or anything, in fact, once upon a time like in the old days of DOS (ha! ha!) I used to know much more than I do now, and a LOT more than anyone I knew, professionally or personally, and could troubleshoot my way around just about anything without any instruction or help. Now I feel like I just don't know SQUAT! I have really kind of "fallen off the technological grid" so to speak! So there's a good chance I may not be seeing something important that may be obvious to someone with expertise, or more experience and knowledge than myself. I hope this all makes sense, and I do understand how it can be difficult to try and diagnose/troubleshoot a computer that you don't access to or hands on with personally and are just going by information given by another. So I do SOOOOOooooo apppreciate your assistance with this issue! My Geology class is ending and ALL assignments, exams, everything GRADED must be submitted by THIS SUNDAY!, so I am kind of panicking because this computer problem has consumed too much time in this past week or so especially, due to worrying about it crashing and trying to figure it out before hand to avoid any down time, etc., etc., etc. So any feedback, suggestions as how to proceed are so very welcomed and appreciated!! Hope you are having, and continue to be blessed with, a wonderful day ;-)

****I thought I would add this info in case it means something...Recently I installed Core Temp 1.0 RC8 program, which opens with Windows and I watch the monitor, since I keep it open all the time now. I have the monitor showing "Processor Information" so it lists all eight processors' Frequency, as well as the "Load %) for each of them. I noticed that the Load % numbers don't necessarily "match" with the rise in Frequency numbers. For instance, USUALLY the Freq numbers ALL change at the same to to the same Freq on all eight, but sometimes there may be one or two that changed to different Freq numbers. The rise in Freq is always peaked when my computer is being super loud and stays at very high numbers until it's not so loud any more, but there are plenty of times when the Freq is peaked (the highest numbers I have seen) yet the computer is NOT being loud, in fact whisper quiet. The "Load" percent of each processor, reflected on the Core Temp monitor screen isn't necessarily a high number when the processor's Freq numbers are high/peaked. The Load % constantly changes, whether the computer is being super loud or is whisper quiet, but the only difference I have noticed in what changes with the Load % numbers is they are generally much lower when the computer is not super loud, and much higher, some even peaking at 98% and down to the teens. A few of the eight processors reflect 0%-3% during the whisper quiet times, while the others show percentages between 5-17%, randomly reaching higher levels here and there, but it's USUALLY consistent among each specific processor. Processors #1, #3, #4, and #7 tend to stay on the low end, while Processors #0, #2, #5, and #6 tend to be the ones to reach higher Load % numbers than the others. But this is all random, and the numbers as I said constantly change literally every second, sometimes jumping from the extreme lows to the extreme highs each time..which seems kind of strange to me, but what the hell do I know? Not much! LoL... Ok so, I hope I am not overloading you with this stuff, nor if it's even necessary or prudent information. Please let me know if there's anything you need from me, or if I am bugging! Thanks again.........Denise

No worries you are good, I know how frustrating it can be having something not work as expected. Since there is no pattern to noise and load we'll just say its random.

If possible try changing out the cpu cooler since I believe that is where the sound is coming from, buy it from somewhere you can exchange to try a few and can return if none fix the issue.

Ok will do. Thanks for all your help! I may be back....until then, take good care!

Best Regards....... ;-Denise

Hello again...I am having these same troubles and still am unable to determine if it is my cpu or my gpu. I can't really afford to buy both unless of course it is both giving trouble and then I am forced. Is there any software that I can run or tests that could be run where I could send the results your way or to somebody that would better determine what I am looking at? I am having another issue lately: tiny black line at random and in random places across my screen show up for just a split second, which I am assuming is my graphics card. However, when I ran a test on my graphics card all was indicated "OK", it passed all the tests. And I ran a test on my hard drive, all tests passed. My screen has actually went black a couple of times as well, but it came back up without rebooting, and nothing was amiss (seemingly). So if you could offer any suggestions I would be most appreciative!!

That new issue does seem gpu related, I can't think of any software that will help evaluate these issues further so what I would do is find a store that has a no questions asked return policy. A $20 gt720 (passmark score 737) would be twice as fast as your 7450 (passmark score 320) a worth while upgrade if you do any gaming, if not you may even go cheaper if you just want a display.

What are you cpu/gpu temps (acording to msi afterburner)?

We can only figure out what's wrong by trying something new, one thing at a time. Anyway hope all is well and that your pc isn't driving you crazy!

Hi, no not at "crazy" ....yet!!..haha! GPU temps stay between Min: 46 C Max: 60 C, while the usage doesn't seem to max out at more than 75% (normally) that I have seen so far.
CPU temps Min: 13 C Max: 65 C, while the usage of each of the 8 CPU readings vary randomly and wildly, the overall CPU usage % is Min: 0 Max: 67%, In today's monitor the log for each CPUs usage % "Max" % amount is as follows: CPU1: 93% CPU2: 84% CPU3: 94% CPU4: 90% CPU5: 100% CPU6: 94% CPU7: 100% CPU8: 100%
Although some days they have all reached a max of 100%, not all at the same time, and the most I have seen max out at 100% at the same time is probably 4 of them with the other 4 between 60% and 92% (roughly) and again, this is random. Of course some of the time when these are maxed out at 100% I have a few windows open, but I have always been able to have a lot more going on than this and never had any issues nor loudness until this started happening.
So you really think a $20 gt720 would be twice as fast as the 7450?! Yikes, that really speaks volumes about the 7450 doesn't it!! Ha! Ha!
I will definitely get that as soon as I'm able to get to any place, since I now have a blown head gasket on my car!! My only form of transportation...sometimes life's little obstacles come in clusters and it really sucks, but ya just have to roll with the punches I guess...
Thanks for the help....let me know if you have any other ideas....again, Thank you so much!!
*******p.s. I forgot to mention that I was closely watching the fan on my GPU and it's not constantly going. In fact, it has a pattern of barely making a rotation then brief pause (about 2.5 seconds) then same spurt then brief pause, then same spurt again and brief pause again, then it spins for about 3-5 seconds MAX and starts that same routine with the short bursts of spinning, so I imagine this isn't normal, right? And no matter how loud the computer gets, or how hot, this same pattern persists.******

Your temps and usage are normal, the gpu fan on and off in such a short time frame isn't but also doesn't appear to be the source of the noise, especially if your gpu fans are turning off for a few seconds and the loud noise remains.

It might be your psu, they normally aren't loud but can be when something is wrong, which may also be why you are having graphical issues too. A little trial and error will quickly/clearly identify if it's psu or cpu, I don't think it's your gpu in less I'm missing something.

I just typed a long response and then lost it all!! How annoying is that?! LoL...Anyway, here I go again!! I ordered that $20 card from EVGA and it's on the way, mainly because it out-performs mine and it was a cheap fix! Thanks by the way. Did you have a good weekend?? The weather here is superb (Sacramento area in California) so it made for a beautiful weekend, hopefully you experienced the same!

So I went nosing around in the Event Viewer and found (among countless other strange errors/events, yet totally above my head) 4 events that were repeated so many times, too numerous to count, accounting for 90+% of the entire log's entries. In the event viewer I found these items in the same location under the heading: Applications and Services Logs-Microsoft-Windows-Diagnostics-Performance-Operational Log.

All 4 provide the exact same "Description" in each log entry: "The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention." Then followed by either "Scenario" or "Reason" with "Diagnosis", and beneath that is a bunch of "Data" about the event. The first 2 I list here are quite frequently together (one right after the other repeatedly) and the last 2 aren't quite as frequent and usually the 3rd event is by itself although occasionally paired with the 1st event I listed and the 4th event is not nearly as common as the other 3 but is in the log repeatedly none-the-less and frequently paired with the 1st event I listed as well. So here it is:

1. Event ID: 500
Description: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario: The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded.
(followed by a bunch of "Data" about the event, however this entry along with #3 have the same info: <Data Name="DisplayDeviceFriendlyName">AMD Radeon HD 7450</Data>

2. Event ID: 501
Description: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Reason: Graphics subsystem resources are over-utilized.
Diagnosis: A consistent degradation in frame rate for the Desktop Window Manager was observed over a period of time.

3. Event ID: 500
Description: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario: Video memory resources are over-utilized and there is thrashing happening as a result. Reducing number of running programs and open windows may help resolve this condition.

4. Event ID: 501
Description: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Reason: CPU resources are over-utilized.
Diagnosis: A sharp degradation in Desktop Window Manager responsiveness was observed.

So, am I just a moron and am overloading my computer? But if that's the case I wonder why before this problem began (around a year ago but wasn't nearly as bad as it is now!) how I was able to have all kinds of windows and multiple programs open and running at same time and NEVER experienced any issues nor loudness, except on rare occasion a small white or black box would cover a small portion of either monitor's screen (1-1/2" x 1-1/2" around) and then about 10 or so seconds later would just vanish! Now I don't have to have anything open sometimes when the computer gets loud and I see a spike in the CPU usage % and sometimes will see a spike in the GPU usage % in MSI Afterburner. I guess something is failing, right?

As I mentioned earlier, there were so many error entries that I of course don't understand, but it sure didn't look good, that is for certain!! Some of the errors were duplicating themselves over and over and over again, page after page of the same event within the same second even!! Crazy! I wish I knew more about computer systems. Once upon a time, I use to love going into DOS and seemed to know way more then than I do now! But I am 50 now...Ha! Ha!

So, when you have the time of course, any feed back would be helpful, and as always, I am so thankful for you taking the time to help me with this problem, you are most appreciated!! Hope you had a great weekend... Thanks again ;-)

You may have found the culprit, I'd do a fresh install of Windows 10 (if you're still on 7 or 8 I really recommend 10). That may lead to your system being able to relax when it's not doing anything like you mentioned.

I am having a nice week so far and similar weather to yourself since I'm down the coast from you in Los Angeles.

My GPU is expected to arrive today so I will be replacing that but should I also be concerned about replacing my PSU? If so, what would you recommend on a shoe-string budget that's compatible with my computer? And which do you see as being "the culprit"? I'm still using Windows 7 and am waiting until the very last minute to upgrade to 10. I already put in for the free upgrade, however my roommate has 10 on a laptop and I can't stand it!! I don't like how it uses apps and is really hard to get used to, shoot I barely got used to 7 from XP but much prefer 7 over 10..dragging my feet I guess but until I have a bit of a break from school I would rather not try to learn a whole new OS while going to school.

From what I gathered your computer is running tasks for no reason which is what's triggering loud noise even while your computer is idle which is why I recommended either a reformat on your current OS or updating.

I have a lot of faith in 10, have it on 4 of my computers including a windows tablet that has a somewhat weak atom cpu and 10 helped with it's overall speed and efficiency so if it makes a slower processor seem faster that speaks a lot of the under the hood updates that we may not be aware of.

Congrats on the GPU, power requirements are still very low for anything less than a 950 so you're good. I'm a big performance per dollar guy so that upgrade really jumped out at me.

I'm baaack...LoL...More problems...and the existing problems have worsened. BSOD, and what appears to be a different colored BSOD - one monitor turns completely one color and the other monitor another color completely, Green, Orange combo, a white and green combo, quite unique in my experience! But the system locks up when this happens and I have to hold the power button in to turn it off. And the system seems to be getting less and less tolerant to these surges of what looks to be either heavy resources being used? and/or memory shortage, and/or memory leaks? I have monitored the temps for all devices and noticed that the motherboard tends to get up there at times...the highest I have witnessed though is 58 C and the graphics card (GeForce GT 720) isn't far behind but usually doesn't go over 50 C, although it does seem to stay at a higher temp than all the other on a regular basis, around 40-45 C.

Anyway, I did some more nosing around, this time I ran a generated a system health report (or System Diagnostics Report). One area in particular was of interest in the Hardware Configuration tab, under Plug and Play Classes. Lliterally EVERY listing in this subcategory that referenced it as a "Legacy..." device of the Plug and Play Classes DeviceID description, listed "Degraded" as the "Status" property value! For example, within the "PlugAndPlay Classes" section, under the heading "Query", under "Returned Objects" is "Win32_PnPEntity.DeviceID="ROOT\LEGACY_PSCHED\\0000", and when you click to expand this item, it shows under "Property", "Value", "Status", "Degraded".

I am just wondering, in your opinion, is this something out of the ordinary and should I be concerned? Or is this normally how these should be listed and I needn't worry? Please let me know what you think is best how to proceed from this point.
Thanks again! Denise

I'm still thinking you need Windows 10, it'll update all your device drivers automatically and most likely fix whatever software issues you are having.

I recently bought an older i5 laptop off newegg for very cheap that came with Windows 7 but right out of the box wifi didn't work, updates wouldn't install and performance was BAD so I decided to install Windows 10 from a USB drive because a system that can't install updates is useless and a waste of money in my opinion.

Once the USB drive started to install Windows 10 I noticed for the first time after a few days of trying to fix various issues that that the wifi light on my laptop was lit/on before a single update was installed. Upon the completion, the laptop became everything I expected and more so you should definitely give Windows 10 a shot and even on a clean install it may fix all your issues and even increase performance. I am aware you're not wanting to upgrade but it is still going to be my recommendation.

Ok so I upgraded to the Windows 10 platform and the problem is still there. It's become much much worse, and that started before I installed 10. I downloaded another spec program called Speccy which actually shows the motherboard temp, along with temps for the cpu, ram, gpu, hard drive. Since installing Speccy I have closely monitored the temps, which shows the motherboard to be the one getting hot. It has gone in the red too many times, the highest I saw it go was 65C before another bsod! The cpu temp tends to climb when the motherboard temp gets up there, cpu also going in and out of the "red" zone. Another thing I found in the event viewer prior to windows 10, was a hardware fatal error, of the "northbridge" ?? What the heck is that? Is that supposed to be my motherboard? I've seen southbridge somewhere but never have seen northbridge. This same error was listed 2-3 times recently. SFC fixed some files and I have run it several times since and nothing was wrong. I'm also continuing to get errors saying display drivers failed but has recovered and for some reason the old drivers from my old card are the ones listed in the error, even though I have uninstalled them. The software even is in the right click menu of my desktop! I don't see where else to remove these drivers other than the registry but unless I have specific instructions I don't dare go there! I think there may be a compatibility issue with the new gpu as well, or the drivers or something is wrong with the system where the gpu is operated through because that seems to always be the root of the errors I get! I'm actually typing this from the sick computer and the temps are normal, but when I first opened this second window in chrome the temps started to climb on the mb. I start to get worried when it reaches 45C because that meant it was close to 50C which is when it recently started at that temp to give me the bsod.

So, with all that jazz, what would you recommend? Should I be posting in a different forum perhaps? As always, I appreciate all that you have done! Hopefully s cal isn't going to be a scorcher like up here in n cal (supposed to be 100 here tomorrow, hitting 80 by 10am!!!).
Take care....Denise

Try a clean install on windows 10 and also get all the updates until it says there aren't any more to download, those temps aren't terrible and I still think it's a software issue.

As far as other forums feel free to post a new thread here or anywhere else, there is no clear front runner IMO, sorry I couldn't be of better assistance, if the reformat doesn't fix your issue I'm personally out of ideas.
