what graphics card to get

I would like to know which cards to sli.it is either gtx 970 sli or r9 290.

1. Can't SLI AMD cards, it's called crossfire and you should research the minor differences to make your experience a better one.
2. Those cards are both good, based solely on the fact that dual R9 290x cards will draw a lot more power and generate a lot more heat than dual GTX 970 cards would my vote is for the GTX 970. But both cards are good for running in dual configuration.

Cf 290x will outperform sli 970, but will heat up way more power and generate much more heat. As IamTechTim suggested, go with gtx 970 since the performance difference (less than 5%) won't be enough to compensate for its shortcomings.
