Hey guys... so right now my current setup is:

i7 6700k
evga gtx 950
1080p monitor

so my graphics card and monitor hold me back from what i wanna do... play AAA games.

I'm looking into purchasing either a gtx 1080 or 1080 ti but i don't know what will be better for my needs.

first off here are the monitors i am looking at to purchase:

Asus Pg279q
Asus Ultrawide (Pg348q or a newer model coming out soon)

of course i will only be purchasing the Asus Pg279q first and im not sure when i will get the ultrawide.

My question... is it worth the extra $300 for a better graphics card that will last 5+ years? or should i stick with a 1080 for a couple years?

i'm going into computer science/graphic design and i want to do 3d modeling in the future along with fps/AAA/mobo/rpg

let me know your thoughts and suggestions!!

Looking at 1440p 165Hz or 1440p ultrawide @ 100Hz, depending on the titles, you may well need a 1080TI to achieve framerates greater than the refresh rate at high(er) settings - although a 1080 should be fine for medium-high settings more often than not.

You're looking at a ~$200 difference ie 40% (1080 @ $500 or so vs a TI @ $700), with the relative performance of a TI being ~20% above the 1080.
Personally, I'd look to a 1080 out of the two options...... BUT, a 1070TI is a pretty appealing offering - >95% of the 1080 (an can close that with some overclocking) yet only 85-90% of the price ($450 vs $500+)

Between the 1070 Ti and 1080, it depends on where you live and shop. Prices between the 1070 Ti and 1080 are all over the map depending on reseller and brand. In some cases, the spread is massive. In other cases, it's not. Case in point, on NewEgg with MSI:

GTX 1070 Ti Titanium for $490 - https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137255

Or a $510 GTX 1080 DUKE (highly factory overclocked) - https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137084

Between those two GPUs and overclocking that factory overclocked 1080, the spread is still between 7-10% better performance depending on games for just 4% ($20) more. I'd choose the 1080 in this case. With all that said, if I was in the market for a new GPU upgrade, I would seriously consider waiting for Volta next year before dropping big money on a high end GPU, especially if I was going to keep it for many years. Yes, there will always be something better coming out, but being this close to a generation upgrade from Nvidia with Volta would have my buying on hold.
