What hardware stops broadband connecting in laptop

have a dell laptop connected to a net gear modem 4port router everything was working fine. switched it of pulled out the power plug when a thunder storm was happening.
switched it back on the next day and it would not connect to the internet, it will work wireless to the modem, but not via the Ethernet cable, get error message 651,or adapter not connected. have checked the cable with another computer works fine.

have checked every thing I can think off including internet settings, protocols, you name it I have tried it . But I seem to be missing something, is it possible to be a hardware issue that has occurred on the cable port, side of the laptop?

Try uninstalling and re-installing the ethernet network card.

Found out the port to mother board has a problem.
