What has been the highest recorded stable overclock to date?

Hi

I'm not an overclocking but i understand the basics of it.

Just curious how high have people been able to get unlocked consumer grade CPU's frequencies up to?

I looked on Google and saw some crazy records of around 7-8GHZ overclocks for AMD's FX 8000 series and Intel's Skylake.

Shouldn't a CPU pop at such high overclocks, I have actually seen a CPU pop once... sparks came from the CPU for like 1 seconds and a bit of smoke.

Solution
Pushed my 8350 on BIG AIR cooler to 5.2 and stable , my son now owns it now states he's running it at 4.8 now.

Same, the farthest I've been able to push my 4770K was 4.5ghz @1.25V and the difference in FPS was very small around 4 if I remember correctly. Knowing what I know now I would of just saved $100 and just went with the Xeon 1231.

Overclocking competitors use liquid nitrogen cooling and care little about cpu longevity.
The overclocks in the 6+ghz range come from those competitors.

If you are interested in more normal use, then how high is determined by the quality of the particular sample.

For skylake, I have accumulated statistics from silicon lottery, an outfit that bins chips and sells the better ones for a premium.
The 2% top will be chips that have been delidded for better thermal capability.

As of 5/2016
What percent can get an overclock at a somewhat sane 1.40v Vcore.
