I just got AS5 today and put it on, but it didn't seem to work so I re-tried it. When I retried it, I took off the AS5 with alcohol, let it dry, and put it back in. When I started up my cpu I smelt a burning smell. I imediately shut down my pc. When I took out my cpu 2 small pins came off.

Now I need to konw, did I fry my cpu? (amd64 3000+ 754). I thought it was maybe my videocard because nothing would come up, but I switch out the 6600gt agp for a ati 7500 pci and I still didn't get a pic, so I ruled that out. The only other two things I can come up with are that either my mobo, cpu, or both are friend. When I took out the cpu and 2 pins came out, they stayed in the mobo.

Do I need to re-buy a mobo/cpu? What do you think is wrong so I know what to buy?

If by any chance both are fried, I want to go 939 instead of 754. I also want to get SLI, so would my psu (ultra x connect 500 watt) work or do I need a better psu?

CPU IS DEAD.

You can't install CPU's correctly - unlucky!

Remove the pins completely from the mobo or they could cause a short. I think your CPU won't work without the pins. If you can get a CPU to test your mobo I'll get a S754 sempron, that way if you fry it it's only about $60.
Upgrading to S939 is a good idea but Ultra PSUs are not very good. If you're going to get SLI I'll get a Fortron or something similar. But if you're not going to get a 7800 PCIe with the SLI mobo I'll recommend getting an nforce 4 ultra mobo from Epox of DFI.

Burning smell and two pins broken off normally indicates you put the CPU in wrong, turned 90 degrees or 180 degrees from the position it's supposed to go.

that sucks. i'll just go 939; probably 3500 or 3700. which do you think is the best bang for the buck?

also, if i go sli, right now all i have is a 8x 6600agp card. could i use that still while i wait for pci-e video cards?

Hmm, small problem: While Socket 939 is a good idea, going AGP means you won't have a PCI-Express slot. That is, unless you wait 2-4 weeks for retail ULi M1695 chipset boards to come out. And then you still won't get SLi, but you might be able to do Crossfire...
