So there's this bottleneck calculator i don't know if it's correct (http://thebottlenecker.com/bottleneck-calculator/), but there aren't any Core 2s on the list, so which i3 is similar to the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400?

Solution
I wouldn't invest too much time into that calculator. First off, bottleneck for what? Gaming? Which game? Photoshop? Excel? Video encoding? Playing solitaire? Too generic. Each game is different. An i3 will be a bottleneck in bf1, a gtx 1060 might be the bottleneck in watchdogs 2. 16gb of ram is recommended and it says ddr4. My system doesn't use ddr4 and I'm not about to upgrade my cpu, motherboard, reinstall windows etc to move from ddr3 to ddr4. 16gb of ram for many things is still overkill. For photoshop or illustrator multitasking, depending on the project, 16gb may not quite be enough. It was barely worth the page load to be honest.

On to your question, you wanted to know which i3 except all those generations equates to a core 2...

On to your question, you wanted to know which i3 except all those generations equates to a core 2 quad. That only leaves 6th/7th gen and both 6th and 7th gen i3's will smoke a core 2 quad. A second gen core i3 2100 just about matched the multicore performance of the q9400. Single core performance it bested the q9400 easily.

This is vs a core i3 6100te (low power 6100, oc'd to roughly the same as a stock 6100)
