What is a better HDD?

I've been looking at the Samsung Barracuda 1TB Hard Drives, however I noticed other brands of 3.5" HDDs. How do the Western Digital variants of Red, Black, Blue, Green etc etc compare to the Samsung Barracuda.

Furthermore how do they all compare in terms of performance difference to an old Seagate HD502HJ Hard Drive? I assume there would be a performance boost using a SATA cable supporting 6GBps compared to a Sata cable supporting 3GBps, correct?

I inquire because the Samsung Barracuda 1TB has a similar price to the WB 1TB Blue. However am I really getting the best bang for my buck at around $75 or should I get a different model.

I am not however looking for an SSD drive just yet.

There is a reason why, when ordered by cheapest first Seagate drives appear at the top.

SATA III drives are actually not always faster than SATA II. The Samsung Spinpoint range as you quote above being a good example as the 1tb models still fetch a premium second hand.

WD blue and black perform the same, black has a much better warranty. Green drives focus on energy saving over performance.

The current drive I am using is indeed a Samsung HD502HJ, however it is old and honestly getting quite dated. However would it be better getting an WD Drive compared to the Seagate Drive? I take it by your vague wording that the Seagate Barracudas are rather poor in terms of performance?

@V0GI: Why is it very good then? You haven't exactly clarified. I need data before I can make an educated decision. Are the reading and writing rates faster than the WD or vice versa. You haven't told me why its reliable or why its quiet or even how fast it is. Your wording sets me off and comes across as being a paid Seagate employee, and I'm sorry if you didn't mean to come across that way... but your enthusasim over the Seagate drive is a bit too much to be genuine.

Granted I don't really care that much about noise. But at least back up your claims with data. And for the record I live in Australia so a US Tech Support likely won't do me any good. Cause you haven't given me anything to go on other than some vague personal anecdote. :/

Indeed. I have been considering the WD Black. The higher warrenty compared to the Seagate and the seemingly positive reviews are helpful. Whilst its much more expensive, I don't particularly have to worry about two variants of the same drive that might be the poorer quality variant like with the Seagate Barracuda judging from some reviews I've seen. The 5 year warrenty is a significant deal maker compared to the Seagate's 2.

Sorry about the delay in reply, I think your final post sums it up. The WD black's warranty is well worth the price IMO, I'm not a big fan of Seagate and as I mentioned above not all things that are the cheapest are the worst but you have to ask why they need to price their HDD's below WD, Samsung and Toshiba?

On a side note, if you are looking for a bargain the current Toshiba range is very well priced and they are basically Hitachi Desktars as Toshiba bought the 3.5" HDD manufacturing from Hitachi.
