Honestly, I know little to nothing about Modems/Routers but I wish to get a new one because I believe mine is slowing me down. I currently have the "At&t Motorola NVG510" and as you already guessed my service provider is At&t. So basically what I'm asking is what is better than I what currently have, that doesn't cost a small fortune.

What's your budget?

I would do a modem such as the Linksys CM3008:

* I have it never had any problems for the price and I currently am recieving 100mbps up and download without dips in the speed.

The router would depend on how much you want to spend I would recommend a router such as the Asus RT-N66R:
https://www.amazon.com/RT-N66R-Dual-Band-Wireless-N900-Gigabit-802-11a/dp/B00EYKSJ1E/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1485313656&sr=1-1&keywords=asus+n66r
* I've had this router for over a year without any problems and it's currently running DDWRT.

But with out getting technical, it's a good...

But with out getting technical, it's a good combo for $160.

After reading this article on your http://www.networkworld.com/article/2186819/lan-wan/motorola-s-nvg510-dsl-modem----not-very-good.html modem, I can understand the wanting to replace it.

that is a COMCAST CAble modem, he has ADSL. that will not work for him

are just an AT&T ADSL customer or a U-verse Customer ? thers is a difference between the internet systems

"Customers with AT&T uVerse will still need to purchase a modem directly from AT&T as using your own modem isn't allowed at this point. " well I guess that is that....

I did find this one on AT&T web site fod ADSL service : Netgear Model 7550
