What is a broadband splitter?

Our ISP provided this one for our modem http://www.extreme-broadband.com/splitters.html , I don't know what it is for 😵 any help? 😵

its mainly used as a splitter basically takes one cable - coax cable and turns it into 2 of course you need the extra cables. mostly they use them when you want to split the signal from a modem to a tv set box or something along those lines. one cable would run to the modem the other to the tv / cable box. the more you use them though the more loss you get because they are prone to interference from outside signals.

The coax line comes in from the street, and connects to the single side.
On the other side, one leg goes to the cable modem, and the other leg goes to your TV system.
