This is the new entry-level platform for gaming:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor ($110.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($45.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Crucial 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($26.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $183.97
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Most games still rely in strong main core cpu performance. You could postpone the i5 acquisition for later on.

lol might as well go amd at this price point. i wouldnt go lower than an i5. but personally i would wait for AMDs Zen later this year. its either going to be better/comparable to intel, or intels prices will go down. just my opinion

Where have you found trusted Zen benchmarks? There's marketing hype, but I have yet to see real benchmarks.

no benchmarks yet, but if AMD sticks with the trend that their new GPUs are taking, I'm betting on Zen to be a real competitor this time. im not saying they will be for sure, but it looks like AMD may have finally woken up. AMD undercut Nvidia well with the 480x being comparable to the 980 for half the price (so far), and if they do the same with Zen, AMD is going to be the way to go. just my opinion though.

I certainly wish Zen will be very good, but the fact that nothing has yet been released about their real world performance makes me cautious. The latest news that I could find are:

http://techfrag.com/2016/06/10/amd-pushing-zen-based-processors-release-2017/ - this makes sense because they haven't yet released engineering samples; I wouldn't expect retail Zen processors to be available this year.

If you think Zen is going to be some wonder chip that destroys Intel in price/perf and will force them to lower their prices you got it wrong. If a Zen chip is the same performance as an Intel, you can guarantee it will be priced the same or higher even. Don't expect to get any wonderful deals, just buy an Intel CPU now. Even AMD's 40% increased IPC marketing is not enough to reach Intel's current levels.

If you think of it, GPU technology is increasing at a much faster rate than CPU technology. In general people would not recommend an I3 with a GTX 980, and seeing as the RX 480 should be close to a GTX 980, I'd recommend an I5. We may be reaching a point where, since our CPUs are not getting much faster, a better CPU may be wiser now with a mid-end GPU compared to what one would choose with a mid-end GPU from last year.

never said it would be a wonder chip, i said it could be comparable and actually compete with Intel. AMD usually tries to aim for the budget conscious, so i would expect that, if AMD did make any one chip comparable to an Intel chip, the AMD chip would cost less than the intel.

Quite a long time ago AMD released processors that were faster than Intel's; they also were a bit more expensive as that helped them recover some of the development costs. I agree with turkey3_scratch; you shouldn't expect AMD to sell them for less than they can because they also need to please their shareholders.

I can't classify myself either being hopeful or sceptical about Zen, but it all depends on the situation. If you have, say an Intel 2500k or an AMD 8350 it will certainly be worthwhile to wait and see Zen and Kaby Lake, instead of upgrading to a skylake system (which obviously costs not only a new processor which is not significantly faster, but also a new motherboard and RAM aswell). I did made a point about this and I was accused of being "letting people wait and retire in peace" but this is completely untrue because you have a decent processor with you already. I can give you tons of rumours regarding Zen, but I'm not going to guarantee it's true, it's interesting to read, but there is simply no guarantee at all.

AMD did make some really good processors. Do you still remember X4 960T? FX-55? Athlon 6000? Athlon XP 3000? There's nothing wrong with hoping for good products. It just that people are sometimes not realistic that it's just a hope.

To the thread starter: Depends on the price, if there is a significant process difference (let's just say 15% or above) for the processor, motherboard plus RAM I'd go with the 4460. This would even make more sense if you're from an older system (maybe an LGA 1156 or AM3)
