* I meant to ask "What is a good FPS lock..." but I can't edit the title

I recently ordered a new laptop with a 115w RTX 3060 and a 1080p 165Hz display. Obviously, 165Hz is too much for that card too handle, so I'm thinking of locking games to 55 FPS since it's exactly 1/3 of 165. Will that provide a smooth visual experience? Or do I need to limit the FPS to half (82.5 which is not a whole number and is too high IMO) my refresh rate to get smooth visuals? What if I limit to a standard 60 FPS?

Solution
Depends on the game and settings you choose. For example at 1080p Doom should do >140fps with ease. My Dell G5 laptop with an RTX 2060 will do a good 100-120 FPS, and from memory mostly high settings.

I cap my FPS on all games on the laptop to 120fps and where possible pick settings to average around 120fps. This I do to reduce cpu temperature more than anything else.
