What is a good reliable laptop for under $1000 Australia? I had a very expensive HP laptop previously and had nothing but troubles with it. Which brand or model is the most reliable of laptops?

Generally Lenovo laptops are reliable. Especially the Thinkpad line. I'd expect you'll find some for under$1000 AUD.
