What is a good ssd for not a lot of money.

The title pretty much sums it up. I'm looking for a ssd that is on the less expensive side, I dont want to spend over $100.

I will just use it for a boot drive and put some software on it.

I was looking at the 32 gig version of the Corsair Nova drive, or a kingston drive.

Try the Intel x-25v 40gb. Or, for another $4 the intel 320 40gb. Wow, didn't realize their pricing was that aggressive.

However, the x-25v should sell for 75 or something on sale. Watch for it.

Skip the SSD for now, save up till you can afford, at a min 64 or 80 gig SSD. Will prevent you from banging your head on the wall later on. With 40 gigs, yes you will improve boot time and program loading times for the Few programs that you put on the SSD - But how offten do you Boot/reboot the computer? I relize that windows only takes 12 ->18 gigs not counting programs, but that is still 25 to almost 50 % of diskspace and you should leave a min of 15% free - which means a 40 gig drive is down to 36 Gigs.

As Adam indicated the Intel 320 is a great drive even if slightly overpriced (80 Gigs NOT the 40 gig version)

So the ssd saves you 1.5 minutes per day or 9 hours per year. At $10/hour that's $90 savings in one year. Not to mention the smile you get every time you double click.

However, I agree that 40gb is restricting. Give it until summer and 80gb of sandforce 1200 and/or intel 320 should go for less than $100.

I agree. 40Gb may not be enough.

Most of the recommendations are for solid state drives between 80Gb and 120Gb.

I also turn mine off at night. But normally only turn it on once (normally when I get home from work) and leave it on. Reason is that one of the highest stress to a computer is during power on, inrush current surge.
