What is AAM exactly in HDtune ?

I would be glad if somebody explained to me what AAM is in HDtune? Well, I mean, what exactly does it do to make the HDD quieter? Is there anything else that I have to sacrifice except access times?

AAM = Automatic Acoustic Management; you can set priority to quiet seeks or faster seeks but more noise. Besides the access times; no it wouldn't change anything; you'll still get the maximum sequential throughput.
