What is ACPI - LID and why would it wake a PC on on its own?

My laptop wakes up every morning at 4 am on its own because ACPI - LID wakes it up. When it wakes up the lid is closed and not being touched. what can cause the ACPI - LID to wake a PC on its own?

what does ACPI stand for?

acpi "advance config and power interface" every computer has it for like the last 12 years. its basically the hardware what allows different systems to power down and save power when not needed then wake back up.

as for the wakeing up at 4am every day part I would go into the bios and look for a setting that auto turns on the computer at a set time and make sure its disabled. every computer bios I have seen has had a setting somewhere that says power computer on everyday at HH:MM time. it may have been enabled by mistake. theres also usually a settting that says allow devices to turn on computer which you can disable. bios very so i cant tell you the exact phrase or where it will be in the bios. usually under the advance area somewhere though

The answer above is about right, most likely there is a Wake Up On Time set up in BIOS on that exact time, there could be also Wake on USB or Wake on LAN but if its exactly the same hour/minute then the first idea is most probable.

I checked the BIOS and the only thing for wake up was for the ability to wake up from S3 state using a USB port. This was disabled. There were no other options anywhere like you have described.

Do you have any other ideas I can check?

what is laptop make and model number (specific enough to know which one you have for example hp dv6 is not specific but hp dv6-6535dx is) mabe I can get more info from looking at your hardware config

I have another question are you turning off the computer or putting it to sleep/hibernation every day?

I have been putting it to sleep. The ACPI - Lid wakes it from S3 sleep mode.

Are you using the laptop Lid to turn off or put it into sleep mode? If you are using a button instead then go to control panel, Power Options, Change Plan Settings on current plan, Change advanced power settings. Under power buttons and lid turn off check Lid actions and for both On battery and Plugged set Do nothing.
This setting will make the lid switch be inactive so both turning on and off using the laptop lid won't work. Try that, maybe it will help. If not then there is something messed with ACPI drivers.

Btw usually sleep/close is done with button by a short/long stroke.

Yesterday I set the lid to hibernate and checked the power trouble shooter this morning and found that it was still awoken by "Device- ACPI Lid" at 4 am. I did not put it in hibernate state but sleep last night by using windows. I will try and set the lid to do nothing with setting to sleep and get back to you on if the cure works. I have in the past had the lid set to put the laptop to sleep.

based off of what you said your putting it to sleep what you need to do is go into power management into advance settings to where it says
"sleep">"allow wake timers"> and set battery and on power to disabled.

this will not allow any software that has a timed start to check for updates and such to wake the computer up out of sleep mode. I really suspect that some software is doing a upgrade check at that time every day and this will prevent it from running when the computer is sleeping

Turning off wake timers was the first thing I tried and it still wakes. I have also gone into scheduled tasks and turned off anything that was set to wake the PC whether or not it was enabled or disabled but it still wakes. I believe if it was a program waking it the Power Troubleshooter would say it was a program and not the lid causing the wake.

If I could get the screen to turn on after it wakes at 4 am I would use the powercfg -lastwake command to double check what woke the system. But I can't get the screen to turn on at all when it wakes.

It still woke up this morning @ 4 am. As for programs that auto update, I set all but my Anti-virus to not update unless I tell it to. Last night I even set the Anti-virus not to auto update just to be sure that the anti-virus wasn't the reason.

Soon If we can not figure this out I will back up all info and do a factory restore to it and see if that works.

QUICK recap of what I have done to try to prevent this:

Power Options : turned off wake timers
Power Options : disabled the lid from doing anything when closed / @ Ra_V_en the only option is for lid close, nothing for lid open here for me.
Command Prompt: Powercfg -lastwake = powerbutton : this is because I have to make it sleep to see the screen (frustrating). By opening the lid it registers as the power button.
Task Scheduler : turned off anything set to wake the system.
Device Manager: made sure no device can wake the system. RESULT: Command Prompt : Powercfg -devicequery wake_armed = none

Puzzled because this mornings power troubleshooter report says that what turned the system on was "Unknown"

I have the same issue and it's October. I have a feeling there was an ACPI Lid driver that was causing the issue. Would you mind enlightening me on what actually fixed your issue, if it was ever fixed?

My issue was never fixed. Because my laptop had Windows 8 preinstalled it has the options to either refresh the OS and keep all programs or wipe the HDD and do a complete fresh install. Well I have tried both options. But the surprising thing is that it still happens with a complete wipe and fresh install. Now this should not happen by any means as long as there is no program set to wake the system. I have done a fresh install and drivers, turned off wake timers, turned off wake by lan/wan and the system still seems to wake on its own for seemingly no reason. This is on nothing more than a fresh install and drivers.

to stop this from happening I just stopped putting it to sleep. I set it so when the lid closed it turns off. this is the only sure work around I have found. I have yet to find why and how to stop it. Sorry I can not help anymore than the following:

The reason I was getting the ACPI lid as a wake code was because I could only look up the code after it fell asleep again so the new wake command was the lid. So this is normal and why I originally though it was the lid. But because you can not get the screen to work you can not pull the last wake command to find out what and why. It is almost like when it wakes up it does not initiate the graphics driver so the display will not work. This is just speculation at this point because with out seeing what is going on you can not run tests or diagnose a software issue.
