Solution
Basic generalization:
Z87 - good for overclocking, lots of Sata, SLI/crossfire
H87 - not so good for overclocking, great for everything else
H81 - budget level. no crossfire/sli, only 2 Sata 6gb/s ports.
Please, call me Jim!

It really depends on your budget. Some people choose the Z87 even if they are not overclocking because motherboard makers tend to put their best parts onto those boards, making them more stable. There are some bad Z87 boards too, with low quality parts.

If I were you, I'd probably look at a good quality H87 or H81. My personal favorite maker is Asus after many years of building with them. Again, I don't know your budget, or what form factor (ATX? micro-ATX?) you are looking for, but the ASUS H87-PLUS might be a good fit for you.

If you are on a tight budget, and are ok with only 2 Sata 6gb/s ports (also has 2 Sata 3gb/s ports), then take a look at Asrock's H81m

I'm sure a good gaming system could be put together with those parts, yes.

My suggestion? Start a new thread asking for build advice. Make sure you include to give:

1. Your budget and preferred website you shop on
2. What must be included in the budget (do you need OS, monitor etc)
3. What resolution monitor you play on
4. What games do you want to run
5. Other uses for the computer - you mentioned photoshop for example

There are many people in this forum who are really good at selecting the best parts for a given budget.
