what is better a Radeon HD 7950 or an r9 280x?

I noticed thehd 7950 has very high benchmarks but is it better than an r9 280x? I want to get the better one of the two.

The R9 280X, it's basically an upgraded 7970.

7950 = r9 270
The 280x is significantly faster than the 7950/270.
I would pass on the 7950 though and get the newer model. You probably get a free game and the 270 is easier to overclock and is a tad more power efficient. That being said they are essentially the same card.
Both the 7970 and the 7950 can play any game at 1080p on ultra with over 40fps.
Check out ebay ... coin-miners are selling of 7950/7970 for $150. You can get a r9 290 for about $200

So is it better to get the newer cards, instead of the older cards if the price difference isnt that great? Or is there not such a huge difference?

The difference isn't that huge. Get the newer models if the price difference is like $15 or less, otherwise you can stick with the older ones if you want to.

Theres quite a difference between the cards but if you have cash to burn get the R9 280x but if you dont, get the 7950 will suit you just as well.
