For gaming - i5-4670K hands down.
For recording - FX-8350.

I would pick the i5-4670K because it provides a better upgrade path. The AMD FX series is end-of-life. The i5 isn't bad at gaming + recording. It's just not as good as the FX-8350. But the FX-8350 is no where near as good in gaming as the i5-4670K.

I would get an 8320 for $160, a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P for $74.99 and overclock it to about 4.4 GHz. The i5 4670K alone costs $234.99 at Newegg. Then you have to buy a nice board to pair it up with. Don't listen to the "no upgrade path". The AM3+ socket probably is end of life but by the time you need a cpu upgrade more than likely any socket made today by either Intel or AMD will be obsolete. And at that point do a whole new build. That and the price differential favors AMD imho. If price is no object, yes Intel is a better choice.

AMD as of now dominates the budget market. As everyone above has already said, the intel is better however more expensive when paired up with a good board. There is no one-fits-all philosophy where one cpu is better than the other, these both exist for a purpose, if the i5 was straight-out better than the fx would just downright stop selling.
Intel vs amd cpu will mostly depend your budget and especially what gpu you'll be using. Frame drops are far worse on the fx cpus than on intels haswell, mantle api itself does not benefit the 8 core fx alot
So, you need to consider three things
1) what is your budget? for a lower budget the fx is an unbeatable choice, for a higher budget the intel is a better choice
2) what gpu do you have? if you have anything that is as powerful as a gtx 780 or a r9 290/290x then you might want to consider the intel cpu, as mentioned before, frame drops are alot worse on amd cpus
3) what games do you play? if its anything the likes of skyrim and such with insane mods, the fx cpus 8 cores might edge out the i5s 4 cores

Don't go with the GA 970A, it doesn't compatible with new Vishera CPU, it's an old motherboard for Zambezi CPU (like FX 8120), you will need to flash BIOS with a Zambezi processor, also check revision of motherboard, a good overclocking motherboard is GA 990XA UD3 new revision or higher, and with ASUS only EVO mobos or higher (like the Sabbertooth)

then you should be very happy with the performance of the fx-8350. Its also good that you have a mantle capable gpu which should help out a teeny bit with fps improvement with the fx-8350 (battlefield 4 also supports mantle).
Now what people are saying above about the AM3+ socket being at the end of its life, that is legitimately absolutely true. However its also true that by the time you want to upgrade your cpu (probably in 3-4 years?) both the LGA1150 and the AM3+ will be out dated, so you'll want a newer motherboard anyways. The LGA 1155 came out in Q1 2011 while the 1150 came out almost 2 years after it, in Q2 2013
So fx-8350 it is. However keep in mind that this chip is damn power-hungry so you'll want a good 990FX or 990X motherboard with good power delivery and mosfets etc. Also, since the fx runs hot you'll also want to consider a better cpu cooler (something like the hyper 212 should suffice) as the stock fx coolers are junk

Uh, this is a brand new board with EUFI bios.The GA-970A-UD3P is compatible out of the box with ALL FX processors. I have it, and a UD3, and a UD5 and a UD7. So obviously I know firsthand.
