If you want to just play video games, go with the first one, if you want to edit or other things like that, go with the second one.

It just depends what you want to do with the system

why the i3 when you can easily oc the 6300 and get better performance?

You're not really asking the right questions.

To make the most of the 970 with a 6300 you need to be pushing 4/2/4.3ghz.
That's going to require a $70-80 motherboard & a $25 aftermarket cooler.
The i3 will be fine with a $50 motherboard & the stock cooler.
You have to take that extra expense into account.

I'm not adverse to a 6300 with a 970 as I run one myself but you can't skimp on other components quality wise.

yes but i can overclock the gtx 960 into a 970 so i should go with the i5 and the gtx 960 right

The 960 & 970 are incomparable mate - overclock a 960 as much as you like - its still not going to compete with a 970.

Consider a skylake i3 6100 & the 970 is my advice.
