they are close enough in performance that a single 780 ti is better because it has none of the downsides of sli

There's a few games that have very good optimization for sli, so for those few games you'll get better fps with the 680's. There's many more games where the optimization is pretty mediocre, so it'll be a toss-up as to what's better, sli or 780ti. There's also more than a few, especially slightly older game engines, where sli optimization is so bad, or so AMD CF oriented, that not only will the 780ti be better by a good distance, but also some games a single 680 will outperform sli 680's.

Sli can be great, but also a dismal failure, so generally a single, stronger gpu is a better deal for all around game play.
