What is difference between a 1 GB 2Rx16 PC2 6400S -666-12 hynix laptop ram and1

Hello guys, i need to upgrade my notebook memory. what is difference between a 1 GB 2Rx16 PC2 6400S -666-12 hynix laptop ram and1 GB 2Rx8 PC2 5300S -666-12????? plz help.
My original ram is 1 GB 2Rx16 PC2 6400S -666-12 hynix and if i used it in combination with 1 GB 2Rx8 PC2 5300S -666-12 will it reduce performance??my laptop is compaq cq 40.

You need to add a stick of DDR2 6400 RAM, the one you are looking at is 5300. If you add that stick, and your computer still turns on, it will slow your faster RAM down to the new slower RAM.

2R means Dual Rank memory (as opposed to 1R, single rank)

x16 / x8 are just standards for how dense the memory is. Whatever you do, you should get memory that matches.


I personally would get one of these kits, which will be the higher performance type (the same as your original) Also, you know that they will work together, since they are already tested.

@itzdanielp: I went through the link you sent me , but the problem which I'm encountering is that 6400 goes with a 800mhz ram and I could not find a 667 mhz ram with 6400 specification......

That's because DDR2 6400 is 800MHz, the manufacturer might have installed 800MHz RAM which is being slowed down to the Max of the MB.

If you want 667MHz I would go with one of these...

Either those or the 800MHz chips will work fine, just make sure you get the kit and replace both chips.
