What is dual channel and quad channel motherboard

What is dual and quad channel motherboard. How do they work and what is the advantages. Why do my computer shows 667mhz instead of 1333mhz.

Dual channel transmits data between the CPU and RAM memory over both channels at the same time. So if it is running at a 667MHz clock frequency it is effectively transmitting data at the same rate as a 1333MHz single channel system. Quad channel transmits over four channels at the same time so in the same system its effective rate would be 2666MHz.
