what is litecoin mining and how is our affecting GPU prices?

I noticed the R9 series are $100 over MPRP. People keep telling me out is because of lite coming. Can someone explain?

Litecoin miners like other crypto-currency are basically using massive amounts of computing power cracking pointless hashes.
They are forming an exchange network and it can be traded out for real money.
