I need to buy system software for the new computer I'm building. I noticed some was a little cheaper, that said it was OEM. What does this mean, and will it work on mine...I have a Shuttle AK31 MOBO/w Athlon 1.4G processor...Thanks for any help in advance

OEM software, for the most part, doesn't have any functional differences from retail package software. OEM software is generally only for sale when you purchase a new system along with it. You'll be going to your computer maker for support instead of calling the tech support line of the software company.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Basically OEM software/hardware is intended to be sold with systems, not as standalone retail packages.

What should happen: The software/hardware is sold in bulk to an OEM at substantial discount without the packaging/manuals/goodies a retail consumer expects.

What actually happens: The software/hardware ends up being sold retail at a substantial discount. You get the stuff without the packaging, manuals and extras that you don't need but have to pay for when you usually buy retail.

Basically, if you buy OEM software you just get the CD and nothing more...

I like OEM stuff. That's my view, I know others disagree...

Hey, no worries :)
In fact, you added more info to my answer, which was a good thing.
