What is over clocking?
What does it do?
How does over clocking benefit a general user/gamer?
What are the advantages and disadvantages?
How do you overclock?
What programs/software/hardware do you need?
Im thinking about the i5 3570K with a mobo with a Z77 chipset?

All your help will be much appreciated!

Solution
Overclocking is basically making your clock speed higher (Example: your normal clock speed is 2.0 GHZ and by overcloking it you make it 2.5 Ghz)

It makes your computer faster

It will give you faster cpu speeds so everything gets a bit faster and gaming can get smoother and higher FPS

Advantage: Makes your computer faster
Disatvantage : Shorter lifetime

Most people overclock from the BIOS wich is the best way, you have some programs but I strongly reccomend overclocking from the BIOS.

Hardware : Computer with a motherboard that supports overclocking and a unlocked cpu
Software : BIOS

Yes with the z77 motherboard you will be able to overclock and the i5 3570K is unlocked so you'll be fully able to overclock.

overclocking means increasing the base frequency of ur CPU, for eg from the stock 3.4GHz to 4.5GHz
obviously higher clock speeds mean a faster processor, so it improves performance
also when u think ur CPU is old and needs t be upgraded, overclocking an getting that additional performance will let u keep it for quite a bit of time more
this is how it benefits
again same for the advantages
disadvantages are
1. ur CPU runs hotter and consumes more power
2. u need to invest money in a decent CPU cooler
3. it reduces the overall life span of ur CPU
4. it voids the CPUs warranty
overclocking is done through your Motherboard's BIOS, it is not recommended to overclock using software inside Windows
here is a guide its meant for Asus's ROG boards but the process would be more or less similar for others http://rog.asus.com/184142012/maximus-v-motherboards/guide-overclocking-the-core-i5-3570k-to-4-5ghz-on-the-maximus-v-gene/2/
