Depends on what graphical settings. Many say it isn't a 1440P card but if you tune settings right (which normally is high settings not ultra), you can get over 60fps at 1440P and an average of 50ish fps in lots of tough titles.
But if you want ultra settings at high fps 1080P is the way to go.

Also depends a lot on the game. The newest high-end games at medium can be more strenuous on the GPU even at 1080p than older less ambitious titles at maxed out 4k.
It won't do stable ultra 60 fps at 1440 for several titles like Witcher 3. Better luck with the gtx 1070. 580 does well ultra 60 fps, or low-medium >75 fps at 1080p
