Is it the antenna ? or wireless type n\g\b\ac ? the transmit power ?
what are the spec's which responsible for the wireless range ?
all I care about is wireless gain range , I will use the wireless router in "client mode" (exactly like wireless adapter in laptop) But to connect to a wifi network 2km away from me.
I can't afford a nanostation is there a cheap option?

Can I simply plug in a more powerful antenna instead of the antenna that came with router (If the antenna is detachable ofcource )? or is there some kind of incompatibality between the router and the antenna

The max for most civilian wireless routers is around 300 feet (slightly under 100m) without repeaters of some type. Depending on where you are, you could be in violation of several laws depending on how you try to broadcast over a 2km distance.

Not necessarily. Many current routers are tuned to that original antenna. Changing it may make things worse.

Plus which, if the WiFi source at the other end is not powerful...changing your antenna won't make a difference.
For a 2km connection, both ends need to be built for that. Is that far end a WiFi source you control?

Lastly, what is in between? Do you have direct line of sight? Any buildings or trees in the way?

I don't to want to broadcast , I need to connect to a wifi network that is far away from me
Alfa AWUS036H worked for me but the only problem is that its a usb adapter , That mean I have to turn the computer on inorder to connect to the wifi network which is annoying

What do you think Wifi does? It's *broadcasting* and receiving signals from your device.

For that 2km distance, both ends need to be good, and they need to be compatible.
Do you control the device at the other end?

WiFi, by it's very nature, is both sending and receiving. Your WiFi adapter also has to send a signal back, and that WiFi source has to be able to receive it.

No I don't , the other end is controlled by ISP , he uses Nanostation m5 to broadcast wifi
the wireless usb adapter(Alfa AWUS036H) give me an acceptable signal , But I don't want to use it because it works by a usb cable

you asked me about "direct line of sight" yes there is no trees or building , and I can put the device on the roof if that neccesery

Not sure how you got the alfa to run. That is a 2.4g device that runs only 802.11b/g. The M5 in the name of the nanostation means it runs on 5g and runs 802.11n.

You should be able to use the smaller nanostation loco m5 it is less than $60. I can't see how you are going to get anything that much cheaper and then you would have to hack a outdoor solution. These are pretty easy you run a ethernet cable outside and point it at the remote site and it should work.

2km is still quite some distance you will want to put it on the roof to so you minimize the loss you get from the ground.
