Question What is the advantage of renting a server for a game?

So we are setting up another lan in April. I am looking for a new multiplayer game and I somehow come across the ability to rent a server. I would certainly do this for a weekend lan, but I'm completely new to this. What is the advantage of renting a server?

You let them worry about the firewall and other security, and the physical game server.

So if we had a lan at my place last time and played The Forest and we have another lan this month and play The Forest, but this time we play on a rented server, will I notice any difference? Also, it seems like there is some technical know how needed to do this on my end? Anything complicated?
