Hello,

My PC has a Samsung SSD with Windows 10 installed (C: is on Samsung SSD), one DVD RW Drive D:, one WD hard disk E: (for storing data files), one external hard disk Z: (for storing backup files)

In my BIOS>Boot Device Priority (and the Options popup for you to select for each boot device), I see the screenshot below

I am thinking one day my PC might become faulty and I might need to boot from CD/DVD or boot from USB flash drive.

I think 1st Boot Device should be CDROM and not sure about 2nd and 3rd Boot Device

Q1. What should I select for 1st, 2nd, 3rd Boot Device?

Q2. What does [Removable Dev.] mean?

Q3. Is it the Samsung SSD should not be the 1st Boot Device because if 1st Boot Device is Samsung SSD then if Windows in Samsung SSD is faulty/corrupted (SSD faulty or windows problems) then I will never be able to boot from CD/DVD or boot from USB flash drive?

(FYI, I come across this info "It appears that the first item is your internal cd/dvd drive and second is your hard drive so there is nothing wrong with the boot order. You want the cd/dvd drive ahead of the hard drive in case you need to reinstall the OS from your dvd." source https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...-windows/fc8e6b20-d61d-4ef2-85e1-c1c39e5bd2f4 )

Thanks

No, if it was the first boot device and faulty, your computer wouldn't boot. But you could then restart, F2/Del/whatever into BIOS and change the boot order there to boot from a different drive.

Putting other devices ahead of your primary disk just gives the computer other things to check before booting, so makes it take a bit longer. Unless you're booting from external drives a lot, I'd keep the internal boot drive at the top.

What is your recommendation for my 1st, 2nd, 3rd Boot Device? (each boot device can select from any of the 4 selections seen in the [Options] popup)

For normal operations, select the samsung ssd first.
Otherwise the bios wastes time looking for a cd to boot from and waits until it finds nothing before proceeding.

If you ever have a need to boot from the cd drive, change the order in the bios temporarily.

On the removable device, I think it means that you could boot from a usb device like the memtest usb boot
device.

Lastly, consider using sleep to ram(no hibernate).
You will sleep and wake much faster.

SSD 1st because that's what you normally boot from.
The order after only matters is the SSD fails to the point of never recognised as a boot device, but still...

CDROM 2nd, if you have a Windows DVD or similar that you know you can boot from.

Removable device 3rd, or 2nd if you don't have a bootable DVD always ready and waiting.

I've had computers (including my current one) that have issues getting into the BIOS and even the boot menu. If you have bootdrive first, you're just asking for a headache.

Always have external devices be higher priority. Set the ones you will use to the top, the boot device after and the ones you won't ever use to lowest.

a) If the 1st Boot Device is Samsung SSD, and 2nd Boot Device is CDROM or Removable Dev, in what scenario does the PC move on to the 2nd Boot Device?

b) If the 1st Boot Device is Samsung SSD, and 2nd Boot Device is CDROM or Removable Dev, if during power on my PC stuck at the windows logo, or stuck before windows logo appear, does the PC auto move on to boot the 2nd Boot Device? I wonder how long does it wait during a stuck screen happens then auto move on to boot the 2nd Boot Device, sometimes stuck screen can happen for a long time then auto continue to load successfully.

c) If Boot Device is CDROM or Removable Dev, does it auto boot whatever is inside CDROM or Removable Dev or does it have need a user input e.g. select something in a menu and press enter etc?

d) If Boot Device is CDROM or Removable Dev, if the CDROM or Removable Dev contains malware would the malware be auto loaded?

Thanks
