What is the best core 2 for me?

Hello, I will be doing some light gaming and DVD authoring of my 1 year old (camera video, don't know what compression, to DVD). What processor is my best choice? I have an ASUS P5Q3 s775 board that I'll be buying DDR3 and proc for... I'd like to stay around $150 =/-. I found a Q8300 for 150 and E7400 for 110 or E8400 for 170. What does the communiity think?

Well if you got a microcenter need you, we can recommend some cpu from there. they normally have good deals on intel cpu's.

now if you dont have a microcenter near you, then i would recommend getting the q8200 as most video editing...

How good is your cooling? And what sort of memory are you getting? If they are both high end then i would go for the Q8300 and overclock it. If you are using stock and do not intend on overclocking then i would go for the E8400.

Newegg has 2 lga 775 processors in the $140 to $150 range. the dual core E7600 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115059) and the quad core E8300 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115207). however if you are willing to spend $190 instead the Q9400 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115131) offers a better price to performance ratio.

I would however encourage you to consider the newer Intel or AMD processors. If you'll give me a budget i'd be happy to design a system for you

I don't plan on overclocking it, since I haven't overclocked since the Celeron 300 days, but it's always in the back of my mind to do it. I wasn't looking at high end RAM per say, I've looked at these:
Corsair TW3X4G1333C9DHX - $119.00 (2x2gb) 9-9-9-24
G.Skill F3-10666CL9D-4GBPK - $109.00 (2x2gb) 9-9-9-24
OCZ OCZ3P1600EB4GK - $130.00 (2x2gb)
Any thoughts on those?

And I thought about abandoning Intel altogether, but I know nothing about AMD, comparisons to Intel, etc. My brother in law got a Athlon II x4 and he seems happy with it. I've read on here that s775 is on it's way out, but I'm sorta strapped for cash, and although AMD seems cheap to get into, I have no idea where to start for what I need. I am by no means a power user anymore and my Bioshock and FEAR have dust on them, that's how long they've been sitting on my shelf!

Any help is appreciated, whether to point me in a direction, or U turn it and point out some good AMD options. Is AMD to par with Intel for DVD stuffs and the occasional need for electronic killing?I was looking at $250 to update my old Prescott.

Well I went cheap with my system and went from an e2200 to a e5200. So far clock for clock the e5200 blows it away. Went from 12,000 to 14,000 in 3dmark06 . Right now im running at 3125mhz at low volts. I hear these chips can go as high as 4ghz. But ofcourse you must have decent air cooling. Im gonna see how high I can get it, then settle for an reasonable oc of somewhere between 3.5 and 3.7 . For $65.00 the e5200 could be a nice little toy to play with !

E8200 or Q8200 for video editing id go with the q8200 gameing the e8200 will fair better with a modest overclock. i run mine everyday at 3.2 ghz on just a touch above stock voltage ive had it as high as 4 ghz stable but was running a lil hot and i had no need for it.

1 (ok, maybe 2 or 3) last questions, then the order is going in:
The 8200 is $160 =/-, and a 8300 on newegg for $150. Is the OC ability of the 8200 worth the initial loss of speed?
Secondly, I have someone on craigslist wanting to sell a q6600 for $80ish, would I be better off with it being a 65nm over the 45nm q8200. The speeds are comparable obviously and my board can take 65 or 45nm.
Lastly, any concerns or recommendations on the RAM I'm looking at?

No microcenter around me, so they're out (thanks for the thought). OR HOT DAMN, microcenter has a Q8200 for $119 and $5 shipping! Unless someone tells me different, I think that's my go...

the lower nm means u get less heat off ur processor when u overclock so get the Q8200. g-skill's look good among ur listed ones

and try look for rams with lower timings e.g - 7-7-7-16 :S if they exist... but compare them between brands. oh and u'd mite want to match it up with the FSB of the CPU, u can overclock them if u want to go beyond their stock numbers: like from 1333-1600.

CL8 memory, but it's 1600, would that be better than the 1066 and having to OC the memory to 1333 just to run the CPU. It will throttle itself down to 1333 correct?

The Q6600 is definately a strong CPU even today, but $80 seems a bit low to me, I would be afraid there is something wrong with it. I dont run in used part circles tho, so I may be all wet on this.

Yeah, holly cow, a q6600 for 80 bucks ! Great deal if it is in good shape ! I would have got one but I cant see putting $180 into my older 775 rig. If there was a way to fully test it before buying ..............

Well, dude says it came from a Dell 770 that were known for bad PSUs, the mobo and RAM are fried in it, but the video cards are good... He was going to test it, but even if it POSTs, there has to be some residual effect from being fed bad power long enough to kill a mobo and ram is my thinking... The q8200 has been bought, thanks to all here, now to find RAM...

So, as for RAM. The processor is FSB of 1333, so do I HAVE to get 1333 RAM, or for OCing purposes, would 1600 be better so I have room to play with? Will the RAM throttle itself down? I assume not to get 1066, as it would have to 'OC itself' to get to the base 1333 that the 8200 is running at. I got one vote for G.Skill RAM, but OCZ is on sale everywhere it appears, $100 +/- for 2x2 CL8 and $20 more for CL7. I promise this is the last question before this thread can be closed 😛

And can someone point me to a good overclocking guide that anyone has done on the 8200? I've looked at the 'general' overclocking guide here, but looking for a thread someone has actually wrote with the 8200 in mind. I've found a couple here and there, but want the best one (and if it happens to be done on an ASUS P5Q3 standard, that would kick ass!!)
