Alright so a few years back I invested in a Toshiba Satellite L655 with the Intel i3 @ 2.1 Ghz, 4 GB of ram, and all that other jazz. I just upgraded the RAM to 8 GB which is all I need, however I would like to upgrade my processor since she is pretty dated now, without buying a whole new laptop. What is the BEST processor I can upgrade to?

Solution
well, you would have to do a lot of work to upgrade that processor. it wouldnt just be taking one out and putting another in.
there would be a lot of soldering and being very careful, and your motherboard could possibly not accept it which would make it all for nothing.
make sure you have about 30% of your hard drive clean, as your computer taps into it.
Don't upgrade the CPU, doing so in a laptop will be very hard and the laptop/ motherboard might not even support it. What I would recommend instead is upgrading the hard drive to an SSD and cloning the hard drive onto the SSD, giving you fast boot times and more responsiveness in general. Also, try to clear the junk off of your laptop and make sure you have an antivirus program which isn't too taxing on your computer, that can also help.

Something like this:

Well I was able to get inside it and take a look, she is running a 2nd gen i3 2310 at 2.1 Ghz, I was hoping I could possibly at LEAST get an i5.. But if i'm stuck with that processor it's okay I suppose. Hopefully someone out there knows of a possible upgrade. (I think it may be the HM65 chipset).

Well, I guess I will have to stick with what I have then, thanks for the answers everyone. After I finish buying the parts for the new rig I'm building I will have to invest in a new laptop.

yes, the i5-580M will work, and I would suggest it over the i7-640M. Not only are the benchmarks close, but the i7 may not even run properly in your system. The i5-580M is pretty much the best option. Agreed! I did some more research and came up with a similar conclusion. I ordered the i5-580 from a guy on ebay last night for $99 shipped and have the RAM on its way from CedarPC.com (only $55 shipped!). Im going to benchmark with the following tonight and will post 'before' scores and then will swap the drive to the SSD, retest everything. and then do it again once the parts show up and are installed. Success! My PCMark 07 score went from 1551 to a very acceptable 3213!

After first installing it still read as an i3 and I thought I'd have to reinstall again, but after a quick uninstall of the processors in Device Manager, the system reboot, installed new drivers and was good to go!

If anyone is thinking of doing this, I think we both can tell you its totally worth it! Kinda sucks hitting the brick wall that is the video card though O well !

Hi mmrrhh, I am the owner of a Toshiba Satellite L655-S5158. I would like to know if the i5 processor you recommend before will work in my laptop. I would really like to upgrade the processor but only if it is feasible and guaranteed to work. Please let me know if it can be done.

This question is for Members familiar with the Toshiba Satellite L655-S5096.
My question is as follows:
I have a Satellite, as mentioned above, and I would like to upgrade its existing Intel Pentium P6200 @2.13GHz with a Dual Core Intel i580M or similar i5 processor.
Will it work? If yes, would it have to be an exact i5-580M single processor or would a dual one work?

Thank you ahead of time for your replies.
