So i decided i want to get back into PC gaming however because my PC is old it is still DDR3 ans games like rust and popular battle royales are unplayable. I was just wondering what the best compatible CPU would be to run the more modern games

Solution
Ryzen 5 2600 + B450 mobo + 2x4GB DDR4
i5-8400 + B360 mobo + 2x4GB DDR4

The most difficult thing about using the i7-4790K is finding a good Z-series motherboard to take advantage of overclocking.

The thing is though Its whether or not it would be cheaper to buy just the i74690k which im guessing would be quite hard to find or get a new motherboard, ram and cpu that is up to date if it is cheaper, if so what would you recommend?

I still love my 2600k runinng aeres gskills 2400mhz I can only get 2200mhz tho... and my gtx 1080 is stuck in pcie 2.0 but I wouldnt trade her for anything... anyone else know any other handicap I face still rocking Sandy Bridge? I'm sure theres allot more than ddr4 and pcie...

PCIe 2.0 shouldn't limit your GTX 1080 to any perceptible degree, assuming you have it an x16 slot...

Current graphics cards simply don't require anywhere close to the full bandwidth of PCIe 3.0 x16, and only the RTX 2080 Ti is beginning to bump into the bandwidth limits of PCIe 2.0 x16 and 3.0 x8 in some games.
