ok guys don't go saying well but second gen and third gen are so much better get one of them... because I don't have the cash to splash on a motherboard change so it's first gen and only first gen for me so as I asked what FIRST GEN processor is best for gaming with or do I even need to upgrade (I have a intel core i5 650 edition right now)

i5 650 is a duel core which makes the peformance not as good you would need a i7 quad

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-870-Quad-Core-CPU-2-93-GHz-8MB-2-5GT-s-SLBJG-Socket-1156-/161178272962?pt=CPUs&hash=item2586f944c2

heres the benchmarks

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-870-vs-Intel-Core-i5-650

the i7 has double the score in 3d 11

cpu cooler measure your width against the height of cooler before purchase so you know it fits

or this one if pc is small

I'd recommend an upgrade, getting a 1st Gen i7 may be OK for now, but you'll find yourself in the same position you're in now not too far down the line. Games are becoming more and more CPU intensive, and just upgrading the CPU to a 1st gen i7 is not as cost-effective as getting a new mb and cpu

In the UK 920's hit about £65 auctioned on ebay, and the cpu mark for that cpu is 5000, so it is a worthwhile upgrade from your 3100 scoring dual core ht i5 650. CANT LOSE.
