I am considering the AMD Phenom II X 6 1090T, which GPU would pair with it? All ready have 16 GB ram. Thanks for the help. I will get new mother board in a year or two and switch to an affordable Ryzen .

Thanks I didn't realize motherboards were so affordable.
Let me document my assertion.
Your X2 555 has 2 threads and a passmark rating of 2041. That is when all threads are fully utilized. It has a single thread rating of 1069. single thread is more important for gaming.

A intel G5400 sells for $74. It has 4 threads and a rating of 5562 and a single thread rating of 2174.

A 300 series chipset motherboard starts at $52.

8gb of ram is usually ok, but a 2 x 8gb kit of ddr4 ram will be $58

Total $184.

You can go up from there. The motherboard supports 9th gen intel processors up to even the i9-9900K.

how much do you want to spend? if I was you I would get a used 1155 motherboard with a intel core i5 2500. another possibility is buying a oem desktop on ebay with 1155 system then you only need the cpu and possible psu upgrade. recommend hp pro 3500 for upgrading to i5 2500 and the psu can be changed.

$300.00 or less

For that price, you can get a Ryzen 2600, a proper B450-based motherboard and 16 Gb RAM - the new machine would be 10 times faster than your current setup, new, and perfectly able to handle anything you'd throw at it.
Forget about used Intel systems, they would be faster than what you currently have but you'd have to build a new machine from scratch next time you'd want to upgrade.
