I never said I don't like ATI products. I've owned 4 different models over several years. I just implied they are better at making video cards than they are at making 3D chips.
As for competition, I agree that nVidia should have competition but that does not mean it should or must come from ATI. Right now it looks like nVidia is nearly a monopoly but that may not always be the case. nVidia owns a pretty big "pie" but at some point some of the high-end manufacturers are going to say they want a piece.
As for now, ATI may have a tough time of it. Their latest products may have, arguably, matched some competing products but they did not match the best of the best and certainly did not surpass them. 3DFX is gone. nVidia is preparing the release of the NV20 and the release of mobile products. I do not believe ATI can survive in the chipset arena unlesss the the Radeon gains ground now to keep ATI afloat. In the video card arena, ATI is not competing against nVidia. ATI is competing against Creative, Visiontek, ASUS, and whoever else is left in the video card business. ATI must fight to survive in both OEM and retail markets. If ATI fails to hold on in the mobile pc market then the only customer of ATI 3D chips would be ATI, itself.
It's not that I don't want ATI to survive. It's that I can't see how they can survive the attack at all fronts. So I merely suggested that instead of fighting the onslaught, ATI adapt and concentrate on making good video cards using the best 3D available. If they can find a 3rd source, great! If they have to form a partnership someday with nVidia, so be it. If they can survive long enough and come up with the next cutting-edge technology, that would be great as well. Whatever, but I want to see great ATI videocards and I don't care what drives them.
