I would say we receive an infected file via e-mail from a client (per seat) on the order of every one every 6 months. At home, with the kids sharing game maps and mods its less on their boxes..... the wife we have to watch a bit more closely
. Since 1985 we have had two infections get passed our security ..... one an employee who shut off the AV to watch porn on a 3.5" floppy disk (employee was dismissed ... relatively mild infection, easily cleaned) .... the floppy shud tell ya how long aga that was ..... and the other got by the active AV scanner but got picked up by the nightly scanner . Notified vendor who denied that there was such a thing .... again later confirmed few days later by several other vendors and they finally owned up to it and updated their signature files.
With the free AVG and Avast you only have to worry about between 300 - 400 known viruses within the test set
With the free Windows Defender and MS Security Essentials, it's only around 3,300 - 4,300 ya have to worry about.
A recent AV sweep has picked up an infections that came within a software program that had been in a version upgrade and had been out for about 4 months. The vendor was contacted and assured me that the on line scanner he used showed it to be clear
