I have an old Xeon X3220 sitting around and I was trying to find a cheap motherboard that i could use it with. Please help me!

Solution
Abit IP35 Pro, I know will support it. I have had an x3210 and x3230, in mine. My gigabyte P35-DS3L also supported my 3210. The Abit was a far better board, though.

What do you mean by second hand? It does not really matter if used/new. I am looking for something under $45. Is there anything that you would recommend? Thanks

j456796,

One of the best performing motherboards using the X3220 is this one:

P5KPL-AM SE ASUS Motherboard with Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 8200 processor > $39.00 Buy It Now

On Passmark, a system using that board and overclocking to 3.0GHz had a CPU score of 4184.

And, that particular board comes with a Core2 Quad Q8200 and that CPU will make a score of 3271. It could be sold for about $15 so that board net is more like about $25.

For comparison, the best performing board is

Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5 Motherboard (w/ CPU, CPU Cooler and RAM) > sold for $65.

With the X3220 overclocked: @ 3.2GHz the CPU score is 4184 and @ 3.7GHz ! the CPU score is 5191.

Another approach is to buy a whole system, for example a Precision 390:

Dell Precision 390 Workstation | 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo | 1gb DDR2 | 80gb | CD-RW/DVD > $40 or offer + $20.49 shipping

These can't overclock the Xeon, but you don't have to fuss with replacing a motherboard- just swap the CPU and plug in your GPU and drives. A faster project with far fewer things to buy. Plus, these Precisions are beautifully made, ultra-reliable and have 375W power supplies.

I have a Precision 390, free from an architectural office that was closing, in perfect condition. they used it with only 2GB RAM, a 256MB Quadro FX550 for DataCad 3D and seemed to work quite well, but not a high scoring system in that form:

Originally:

Precision 390 (2006) (Original): Core2 Duo 6300 dual-core @ 1.86GHz, 2GB DDR2 667 > Quadro FX550 > 2X WD 320GB . Windows XP Pro 32-bit
[ Passmark system rating =397, CPU = 587 / 2D= 248 / 3D=75 / Mem=585 / Disk = 552 ]

Currently:

Dell Precision 390 (2006) (Revised): Xeon X3230 quad-core @ 2.67GHz > 8 GB DDR2 ECC 667 > Quadro K600 > 2X WD 320GB > Linksys WMP600N WiFi > Dell 24" > 1920 X 1200 > Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
[ Passmark system rating = 1296, CPU = 3631 / 2D= 382 / 3D=862 / Mem= 853 / Disk=569]

I only bought the X3230 and the RAM, the Quadro K600 arrived in the HP z420 listed below

390 With Firepro V4900 (1GB)
[ Passmark system rating = 1458, CPU = 3699 / 2D= 431 / 3D=1350 / Mem= 885 / Disk=552]

390 With Quadro K4200:
Passmark system rating = 1552, CPU = 3467 / 2D= 683 / 3D=4067 / Mem= 866 / Disk=570]

So with a decent GPU they are completely usable systems.

The best Precision 390 with a Xeon 3220 on Passmark:

Rating: 1538
CPU: 3311
2D: 322 (9800 GT)
3D: 694
Mem: 849 (8GB)
Disk: 2203 (MKNSSDR240GB)

So, an SSD helps it along quite a bit.

The best CPU performance is from the Core2 Extreme Q6800 4-core @ 2.93GHz: CPU= 4249

These were designed for CAD and other calculation-intense work- database/ analysis and etc. Using a good GPU these run just fine. I used an HP with a Q6600- same as the X3220 for years as a dedicated sound recording system with no performance issues.
